Nineteen

TICK TOCK THRUST his hand up under Vic’s rifle as it went off. The shot ricocheted off the ceiling.

“Stop shooting,” he screamed.

But Vic shoved him away.

The explosion had brought a couple dozen men running. Confusion and anger had reigned in front of the village. Only the mayor had had the presence of mind to bring a weapon. The group had raced into the tube system, not sure of where the sound had come from. But the further they’d run, the more they’d realized they could follow the cloud of dust.

“It has to be them,” Vic yelled. “They can’t leave! No one leaves!”

“They’re getting away,” someone yelled.

Though Tick Tock had only glimpsed someone’s legs disappearing into a hole, he’d quickly surmised who it had to be. He couldn’t risk them being hurt, let alone killed. He grabbed Vic’s arm and yanked him back. He put his mouth close to the man’s ear.

“We both know they’re not going anywhere,” he whispered harshly. Vic backed away from him, squinting but he paused. “Call the men off,” Tick Tock insisted. “Tell them–”

Suddenly the air shattered with another explosion.
